European private equity firm Ardian is planning to invest more than €3 billion to expand data centre capacity across the Nordic region through its portfolio company Verne, strengthening its position in Europe’s rapidly growing digital infrastructure market.
The investment, backed by Ardian’s $20 billion Fund VI, will finance the construction of new data center facilities in Norway and Denmark.
Under the expansion strategy, Verne’s operational capacity is expected to reach 200 megawatts (MW) in Norway by 2029 and 350MW in Denmark. The company is also advancing its footprint in Finland, where more than 110MW of capacity is either operational or scheduled for delivery by late 2027 or early 2028.
Ardian acquired Verne in 2024 as part of its strategy to build a leading Northern European digital infrastructure platform. Since the acquisition, the firm has focused on scaling the business to meet accelerating demand from cloud computing providers, artificial intelligence applications and enterprise customers requiring high-performance data centre capacity.
The Nordic region continues to attract significant investment from global infrastructure and private equity firms due to its abundant renewable energy resources, competitive electricity costs and naturally cool climate, factors that help reduce operating expenses and improve sustainability for large-scale data centres.
The latest investment follows Ardian’s broader expansion in European digital infrastructure. The firm recently unveiled plans to invest up to €5 billion in a 500MW digital infrastructure campus near Paris, with the first phase exceeding 200MW targeted for completion by 2030.
According to Gonzague Boutry, Ardian’s head of digital infrastructure for Europe, the firm’s continued investment reflects growing confidence that artificial intelligence will drive long-term demand for advanced computing infrastructure while reinforcing Europe’s digital sovereignty and technological competitiveness.
Ardian said its investment strategy remains focused on delivering long-term value through customized investment solutions while supporting sustainable infrastructure development for investors, partners and local economies.
